KalkH2

As part of the project "CO2 reduction in the lime industry through the use of hydrogen-based fuels (H2, NH3) in shaft kilns" (KalkH2 for short), the technical knowledge and tools as well as economic conditions that must be available in order to exploit the CO₂ savings potential through the combustion of hydrogen-based fuels (NH₃/H₂) are investigated.
Simultaneously the competitiveness of the lime industry in Germany, which is dominated by medium-sized companies is ensured.
To this end, the tools of energy system analysis and life cycle assessment are combined in a multi-objective optimization model, which simultaneously evaluates technical, economic and ecological objectives. In addition, the model will be extended by results from a chemical/physical description of the combustion processes in lime shaft kilns using 3D-CFD simulation, carried out by the project partner LEAT (RUB). The results are used to derive recommendations for action for SMEs in the lime industry, which can be used to assess whether the use of H₂ or NH₃ is an advantageous option for a site and which requirements must be met.
